You’re engaged – now what? Other than admiring your beautiful ring and re-telling your proposal story a dozen times, the next big step is planning your wedding day. And here’s the truth: wedding planning can be exciting, creative, and full of joy… but it can also feel overwhelming at times. With over 300 hours going into planning a wedding, it’s easy for it to consume your life. That’s why before you dive into venues, florals, or playlists, there’s one crucial first step:

Why priorities matter

When you picture your wedding day, what’s most important to you and your partner? Maybe it’s walking down the aisle to a string quartet, dancing the night away with your favourite people, or indulging guests with incredible food and wine. Or perhaps it’s the little details – dreamy florals, bespoke stationery, or a stunning gown.

If you create your “must-have list” early, you’ll have a clear focus when budgets creep up, when everyone has an opinion, or when Pinterest overwhelms you with endless inspiration. Your priority list will become your compass.

How to set your priorities

Sit down with your partner and talk through what really matters to you both. Ask questions like:

  • What do we want our guests to remember most about the day?

  • What elements will make us feel the happiest and most “us”?

  • Where do we want to invest most of our budget?

Share this list with your planner, stylist, and vendors so everyone is aligned with your vision. It’s not about having “all the things” — it’s about focusing on the right things.

A little insider wisdom

After planning hundreds of weddings, I can tell you this: while there are 34 possible elements that can make up a wedding (from invites, venue, MUA, florals, candles, signage, entertainment and more) — only 17–22 usually end up being part of the day. And that’s more than enough!
