Should I tip my wedding vendors? Who do I tip? What amount? When?

Should You Tip Your Wedding Vendors?

The LUKdesign guide to tipping, gratitude & celebrating the people behind your wedding day

Who should you tip? How much is appropriate? When should you give it? And what if you’d rather show your appreciation another way?

Wedding planning is filled with beautiful decisions.

The flowers.

The stationery.

The champagne.

The menu.

The music.

The dress.

And then, somewhere along the way, another question inevitably appears:

“Should we tip our wedding vendors?”

It’s one of the questions we hear regularly from our couples—and understandably so.

There are often multiple suppliers involved in creating a wedding, each contributing their own expertise, time and energy. And when you're already investing significantly in your celebration, knowing what is expected, what is appreciated and what is entirely optional can feel confusing.

So let's take the guesswork out of it.

First things first: tipping is not mandatory

There is an important distinction between expected and appreciated.

In Australia, wedding vendor tipping is generally not an obligation or an automatic requirement. Many professional suppliers build their fees around the service they provide, and a gratuity is entirely at your discretion.

Think of tipping as an additional gesture of gratitude, rather than another box you must tick.

If a vendor has gone above and beyond, solved a problem before you even knew it existed, stayed later than expected, or simply made your wedding experience feel extraordinary, a tip can be a beautiful way of saying:

“We noticed. We appreciated it. Thank you.”

And sometimes, the most meaningful thank you doesn't involve money at all.

So, Who Should You Tip?

There isn't a universal list of vendors who must receive a tip.

Instead, consider the people providing hands-on service and contributing directly to the experience of your wedding day.

This may include:

  • Wedding planner or coordinator

  • Photographer or videographer

  • Hair and makeup artists

  • Florist or styling team

  • DJ or musicians

  • Caterer and waitstaff

  • Transportation providers

  • Photobooth team

  • Celebrant or officiant

  • Other on-the-day specialists

The important question isn't simply “Are we supposed to tip them?”

Instead ask:

“Did this person make a meaningful difference to our experience?”

That answer will often tell you everything you need to know.

How Much Should You Tip?

There is no perfect formula.

The amount will depend on the supplier, the level of service, your overall wedding investment and, most importantly, what feels appropriate for you and your budget.

As a general guide, you might consider:

VendorSuggested GesturePlanner / CoordinatorA personal gift, gift card or monetary gratuityPhotographer / Videographer$50–$100 per person on-siteCelebrant / Officiant$50–$100Florist / StylistA thoughtful gift or gift cardHair & Makeup ArtistA monetary tip or thoughtful giftTransportation$25–$50 per driverMusicians$75–$125 per musicianDJ$50–$100Photobooth TeamAround $50 per person on-siteCatering / WaitstaffAt your discretion, depending on the service and venue arrangements

These are guidelines—not rules.

Some suppliers own their businesses and have structured their pricing accordingly. Others are employees or members of larger teams where gratuities may be handled differently.

Always check whether a service charge or gratuity has already been included in your contract or venue package before adding anything extra.

And if you're working with a planner, ask them.

We have a much clearer view of what is customary across your supplier team and can help you navigate it without awkward conversations.

What About Your Wedding Planner?

This one comes up a lot.

A wedding planner or coordinator is often one of the people working most closely with you throughout the entire journey.

They're not simply present on the wedding day.

They're answering questions.

Managing suppliers.

Building timelines.

Solving problems.

Reviewing contracts.

Creating production schedules.

Checking details.

And often quietly fixing things behind the scenes that you'll never even know happened.

A tip is absolutely not compulsory—but if your planner has made your wedding journey exceptional, a personal gift, handwritten note, gift card or monetary gesture can be incredibly meaningful.

Sometimes being seen and appreciated is the greatest gift of all.

When Should You Tip Your Vendors?

The simplest answer?

When their service is complete.

For many suppliers, this means on the wedding day.

For others, it may make more sense after the final service has been delivered.

If you're tipping multiple suppliers, don't leave it until the morning of your wedding.

That's a recipe for one more thing to worry about.

Our LUKdesign tip?

Prepare everything before the wedding day.

Place each gratuity into a clearly labelled envelope with the supplier's name.

Then hand the envelopes to your LUKdesign coordinator or a trusted member of your wedding team.

We can distribute them discreetly throughout the day, meaning you don't need to find suppliers, remember who has received what, or carry a stack of envelopes around your reception.

You should be on the dance floor—not managing envelopes.

But What If You Don't Want to Give Money?

This is where it gets really beautiful.

There are countless ways to show appreciation that can mean just as much—or sometimes more.

Write a meaningful review

A thoughtful review can be one of the most valuable gifts you can give a wedding professional.

Don't simply write:

"Amazing service. Highly recommend!"

Tell their future couples why they were amazing.

What did they do?

How did they make you feel?

What did they contribute?

Was there a moment they went above and beyond?

Specific reviews help future couples make confident decisions—and can genuinely make a difference to a small business.

Share their work

Tag your suppliers when you share your wedding photographs.

Share their posts.

Recommend them to friends.

Send a beautiful gallery image they can use in their portfolio.

Word of mouth is powerful within the wedding industry, and your recommendation can become another couple's perfect supplier connection.

Send a handwritten note

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about receiving a handwritten thank-you.

Tell your vendors what their work meant to you.

Tell them what you loved.

Tell them how they made you feel.

For people who spend their careers creating unforgettable moments for others, hearing that they made your moment unforgettable can be incredibly special.

And Here's Something Couples Sometimes Forget...

Your wedding vendors are people, too.

They're artists.

Creatives.

Strategists.

Problem solvers.

Early risers.

Late-night packers.

People carrying equipment in the rain.

People steaming linen at 5am.

People making last-minute changes while you are completely unaware anything has happened.

The very best wedding professionals don't simply perform a service.

They care about the outcome.

They want to see you walk into that room and have the reaction you've been dreaming about.

They want your photographs to be extraordinary.

They want your guests to have an incredible experience.

They want your dance floor full.

They want you to remember your wedding for all the right reasons.

And when someone has genuinely invested themselves in your celebration, acknowledging that contribution is a beautiful thing.

The LUKdesign Perspective

We believe your wedding should never become a checklist of obligations.

Your budget is yours.

Your decisions are yours.

And tipping should never create pressure or guilt.

Instead, focus on the quality of the experience you've received.

If someone has gone above and beyond, thank them.

If they have made your life easier, acknowledge it.

If they've delivered something extraordinary, tell them.

And if your budget doesn't allow for monetary gratuities?

That doesn't mean you can't show enormous gratitude.

A heartfelt note.

A glowing review.

A recommendation.

A beautiful photograph.

A genuine thank you.

Sometimes those gestures stay with a vendor long after the wedding has finished.

Let Us Take Care of the Details

From supplier communication and production schedules to styling, timelines, payments and those tiny final touches that make the day feel effortless—we're there to hold the details so you can hold onto the moment.

Because your wedding day should be about being present.

You've spent months, sometimes years, creating this celebration.

When the day finally arrives, you deserve to experience it.

Fully.

Beautifully.

Without the admin.

Your wedding. Your experience. Your choice.

There is no mandatory tipping rulebook.

There is simply gratitude.

And if you have found a team of people who have helped bring your wedding vision to life with care, professionalism and a little bit of magic, showing them that you noticed can mean the world.
